Jun 7, 2024 | Uncategorized

Stepping out in the Lagos heat these days is an extreme sport as it is likely you would want to run back indoors. This is not surprising as temperatures as high as 50°C have been recorded in some parts of Nigeria, including Lagos in the past few months. Temperatures this high are in the “danger” level which is associated with a higher risk of heat-related illnesses including heat exhaustion and heat strokes.

For some of you, these are familiar terms but to others, you are lost. Not to worry, we’ve got you covered, class is in session. Heat exhaustion, also called heat stress, is when exposure to high levels of heat starts affecting your body system and you start showing symptoms. Generally, everything is fine if you can cool the person down within 30 minutes. The danger is that heat exhaustion can easily turn to heat stroke if not properly handled and that is where you don’t want to be. The question now is, how do you even recognize heat exhaustion in the first place?

Symptoms Of Heat Exhaustion

There are a few telltale signs of heat exhaustion that can be useful in its diagnosis and treatment. The following are some symptoms and what to do immediately to help.

  • Heavy sweating, cold and pale skin
  • Vomiting
  • Tiredness or weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Fainting (passing out)

How To Treat Heat Exhaustion

The ultimate goal is to negate the effects of the high temperatures and to cool the body down. Here is how you can do that;

  • Move to a cool place (under a shade)
  • Loosen or remove your clothes
  • Drink cool water or a sports rehydration drink (lucozade boost)
  • Mop your body with a wet cloth or take a cool bath
